Practical advice for patients

How do we correctly collect urine for the summary?

The urine summary will be collected from the first morning urine, in the urine summary tube.

Before the procedure:

Wash the genital area well with plenty of soap and water (it’s better to avoid disinfectant products) and wipe the area with a freshly washed towel or makeup remover discs.

In the case of men, it is recommended to remove the foreskin at the time of preparation and to keep it removed throughout the specimen collection.

How we harvest:

Open the urine collection tube and place the tube cap face up on the edge of the sink.

Let the first stream of urine flow into the toilet bowl (for 1-2 seconds) and then, without interruption, collect from the middle stream until the tube is full.

We put the lid on the urine collection tube and place it in a resealable bag.

How we transport:

If we can get to the laboratory within 2 hours from collection: the sample can be kept at room temperature.

If we cannot reach the laboratory in 2 hours: the sample can be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

How do we correctly do the sample collection for the urine culture?

The urine culture will be collected from the first urine in the morning, in the urine culture jar and before the start of the antibiotic treatment. If the urine culture is done to verify the effectiveness of the antibiotic therapy, then it will be performed 5 days after the end of the antibiotic treatment and this will be specified when the sample is submitted to the laboratory.

Before the procedure:

Wash the genital area well with plenty of soap and water (it’s better to avoid disinfectant products) and wipe the area with a freshly washed towel or makeup remover discs. We take care not to touch the genital area with other objects: underwear, toilet paper, etc. Also, we will not open the urine culture jar until the moment of collection, to avoid its contamination.

In the case of men, it is recommended to remove the foreskin at the time of preparation and to keep it removed throughout the sample collection.

In the case of women, it is recommended to separate the labia during hygiene and collection, so that the urine does not touch the pubic hair or the labial mucosa. Also, in the case of sexually active or menstruating women, it is recommended to use an intravaginal tampon at the time of collection, in order not to contaminate the sample with vaginal secretions.

How  do we collect:

Open the urine culture jar and place the lid face up on the edge of the sink. We are careful not to touch the inside of the urine culturist or its cover in order not to contaminate the sample.

Let the first stream of urine flow into the toilet bowl (for 1-2 seconds) and then, without interruption, collect from the middle stream until ¾ of the jar is filled.

We put the lid on the uroculturist and place it in a resealable bag.

How we transport:

If we can get to the laboratory within 2 hours from collection: the sample can be kept at room temperature.

If we cannot reach the laboratory in 2 hours: the sample can be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

How do we prepare for the abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless imaging investigation, which involves visualizing the abdominal organs with the help of a probe applied to the abdomen. In order to facilitate the procedure and to obtain a qualitative image, a special (non-allergenic) gel will be applied, which will be removed from the skin immediately after the procedure. The whole investigation can take between 15-30 minutes.

In order to ensure the best possible image of the abdomen, ultrasound requires preparation on the part of the patient. Thus, it is recommended NOT to eat 4 hours before the investigation in order to visualize the organs in the abdomen in digestive rest and to obtain a clearer picture of them. That’s why, 24 hours before the abdominal ultrasound, you will NOT consume acidic drinks, raw vegetables and fruits, fried foods or foods that can cause bloating. 1 hour before the investigation, we will consume 350-500 ml of plain water and we will NOT go to the toilet until after the investigation.
